Importance of Culture Essay Introduction

What is the importance of culture

Culture is one of the tools that drives the well-being of society. By definition, the term culture refers to the practices and ideas that are shared within a group through socialization (Azzarita, 2015). Having shared assumptions that guide behavior and character suggests that culture has significant consequences on how a society functions. For instance, culture benefits a society by creating a sense of identity, promoting individual growth, and creating opportunities through its collective nature. Exploring the importance of culture establishes a path towards understanding its influence for proper direction towards the desired consequences.

Culture involves having shared values, beliefs, and practices, which eventually leads to a sense of identity in a community.  According to research, creating a sense of identity and belonging has been linked to better individual and communal performance (Azzarita, 2015). The collective nature under which culture exists means that one is socialized into it and starts to not only practice it but also have it as an identity. Culture, in this case, creates a sense of belonging that is important for highlighting the value of life and enhancing the idea of support. Culture is thus important in contributing towards someone’s identity in a way that promotes one’s idea of themselves.

Another benefit of culture is that it can pave the way for individual growth. The development of culture is often used as a strategy to achieve results in environments such as the workplace and childhood learning (Azzarita, 2015). Both of these environments require interaction for optimal performance. Since culture involves shared thoughts patterns and practices through socialization, interaction in a structured way takes place and influences results. A culture that has the strong foundation can then lead to the positive growth of an individual as they share in useful patterns. The interactive nature of culture, therefore, means that it can be used to positives influence a person’s growth.

The collective nature of culture also leads to the benefit of new opportunities based on shared ideologies. For instance, the culture of a community is unique and can often act as a commodity through avenues such as tourism and strategic consultation on how to manage culture for efficiency (Azzarita, 2015). These fields are among many others emerging from culture and creating opportunities for employment and economic development. The realization of what culture can achieve thus highlights its importance as an entity, commodity, and influence on the group. Culture is beneficial in creating opportunities that help the individual as a well as the associated community due to its unique influence.

Culture emerges as an important aspect of society due to its custom influence on the individual or group. The culture that a community holds shapes the identity of an individual and gives them a sense of belonging, which is human need. Culture is also responsible for promoting individual growth through socialization and creating opportunities that were not individually possible for the members of the community that the culture defines. Evidently, culture is beneficial for its role in influencing the quality of life, an individual’s growth, and creating a sense of belonging. Understanding the benefits of culture counts as a step towards encouraging cultural traditions that lead to a healthy society rather than harmful practices. Knowledge of the importance of culture is thus necessary for strategies that promote individual and common growth in a group.
